But without it you're stuck walking everywhere, riding a bicicle, or relying on public transportation. ;) You'll get used to it after awhile.

As opposed to inside driving time. Once you're down do the last few weeks you'll enjoy it.

Are you learning automatic or standard? With standard I can sort of understand not using the accelerator lol, but not automatic.

If the streets are narrow it's probably better to stay towards the center of the road. But if they're wide enough for two lanes, just imagine a line down the middle of the road and that you are sitting in the center of your lane. Shouldn't have any problems then. Oh and, I'm sure you've heard this before, look as far ahead as possible.
