My fambly owns land all up and down Black Creek, about twenty miles from where I live. I never go there, even to my father's (and on my nicer days what he says is mine) portion. Mainly because we are a very scary fambly.

On the other side of the creek is the DeSoto National Forest and a forty mile hiking trail. It is my favorite thing to do with a Saturday. I put on a pair of ridiculous boots made by people who think I should hike in Switzerland, and I amble down the trail until I get tired of ambling, then I pick a sandbar and hang out with the birds and the drunks coming down the creek on innertubes.

The last time all these cousins got together was for my father's 70th birthday party. People kept telling me they had seen me in the woods. I never saw them. They never made their spying known in any way. I left thinking, Whoa. The eyes of the Geralds are upon you. I haven't been back to that creek yet.

One of my friends, though, went tubing not too long ago. She said she saw an old naked man in the creek right at the point where Chaney Creek flows into Black Creek (and incidentally where the fam land begins). I said, "Oh, God. Who let Uncle Paul out?"

One of my students said he went camping "across from" the national forest, and some really big, scary rednecks with big, scary dogs chased him away. I said nothing.

Now, on the other end of the social scale, my sister and her husband own a "country place" on a private lake near by. She has given me the security code to get into the neighborhood, but she has never told me which "place" is hers. So another good thing to do with a Saturday is to go up in the rich people's neighborhood and play "guess which boat" I can take for the afternoon.

All of these activities go well with cheap wine.
