In the Mennonite community, they had babies dying at an abnormal rate. Seems they would quit eating and die. Turns out that it was related to what is known as Maple Sugar Urinary Disease. (Named because diapers full of urine smelled like Maple syrup instead of ammonia.) This happens in 1 out of 300,000 babies normally, but was more prevalent in Mennonite community as they tended to marry amongst themselves (2,000+ population). If doctors can diagnose it quickly enough, they can treat it with a low protein diet. Babys were dying as mother's breast milk is very high in protein. Which reminds me of the MJ & BJ morning radio show talkshow about husbands and boyfriends that like mother's milk from their significant other....some guys just never grow up??
