A shaft of sunlight flits among the snowgums, flashes of gold against the silver. The mare jogs, threading between the snowgums. Her ears prick forward and her nostrils dilate. A mopoke hoots shrilly and she shies, hooves skittering. Muscles tense as she freezes. Shimmering gold in the silver forest. Her lids half close as she feels the air, listens to branches moaning above her.

A foal had been born.

The silence is overpowering. She is alone. A slight breeze ruffles her mane, lifts her forelock. And with the breeze came a scent. Yuluwirri.
