This is what I meant. I can imagine that if the party somehow ends up on a deserted Island we'd need to find a way to gather food while we prepare our escape. Also, food, campfires and all that would come in handy for 'closing' the day. The party could make a campfire and eat something before going to sleep (i.e. logging off for the day).

In my opinion food, water and shelter can effectively BE the storyline in some occassions. Imagine being forced to hide in some cave in the winter because of a blizzard raging outside. In such occassions the party better be able to make a campfire and be able to gather and cook some food, or they might not survive the blizzard.
I think hardships that aren't directly linked to 'The Bad Guy' can be very fun to RP.

Just think of the Fellowship of the Ring trying to pass over Caradhras being forced to put those branches on fire.

On a sidenote: I don't think we need a complex system for these 'skills'.
Like I said, maybe a simple script that gives you a set percentage of being succesfull at cooking or making a campfire. James Burfield, my character is an entertainer. I imagine his chance at making a campfire would be anywhere between 10% and 20%. However, a Ranger would probably have a 90% chance of doing so.
I think it might be best to do something simple like that and give each character a percentage of succesfully 'doing' the skill based on their character background.
