I was just mulling over some ideas for starting out the next campaign. I was thinking of starting everyone out at 1st level but then thought that might not be the best. So, here's an idea I had:

At the begining of the first session I give everyone, say, 10,000 gp. With it you can buy a level for 1,000 gp each or save your money and buy information, significant magic items, treasure maps and other equipment (I'd be open to other ideas here). You could spend all your gold on 10 levels or spend it on 5 and have 5,000 to spend on starting equipment. This would give a bit more power to the players to craft the kind of character you wanted.

(I might just make the level span on 1-5th level)

Ideas? Suggestions? Comments?
