I like the idea, but it brings some fundamental problems along with it. A player who spends all his gold on levels (thereby getting to, for instance, level 10) will ALWAYS be more powerful than a player who spends half on levels and half on equipment. Levels are just more useful and are in the end better than equipment, IMO. This is largely due to the fact that equipment is expensive as hell!
A longsword +2 will cost you like 4000 gold already, which could also get you 4 more levels.

If you make the level span between 1st and 5th level, you'll find that practically everybody will go to level 5 anyway and spend the rest on weapons.
I like it that way, actually. You could get the remaining 5K to spend on other equipment, either on a stronger sword or armor, or an amulet of something.
