Yes, I do consider "U Can't Touch This" a rap song as well as "The Humpty Dance", "Walk This Way" and even "Rapper's Delight". The fact that times have changed, doesn't change the fact that these are rap songs. I would say that hip hop is largely a 90s and current music trend, but rap did exist during the 80s.
For those of you who read Rob's book, the point was made time and again that the main reason that AT40 failed was that radio programmers were dismayed by the emergence of rap music and changed formats. The year rap became a fixture on AT40 was 1989. While I do agree that the show would become much more rap-oriented later on, the trend definately started in 1989.
