Cedars Burning


The sunset has faded over the mountains
Much like a cardinal flying west
On the cool flow of air.

A match
Carelessly cast away
After your coarse hand carried him
To the tip of a cigarette.
How many matches have you lit
Before me?

Twigs pop and crack under
A growing blanket of flame
Making shadows dance on the cedars.

Clouds roll in like gods,
Angry and exiled to the world of men
Circles darken in the red sands
As cracked clay drinks
Attempting to blur the splits
In its wounded body.

A pillar of steam stretches upward
As plummeting droplets
Collide with flame.
The fires die.

Roses bloom amid the mists of early morning
Soft crimson sheets quiver in the westward wind
My charred body dispersed in the mud
Carbon to be eaten
By infant roots outstretched.
I wonder
Did your other matchsticks
Fare so well?
