Nice surgery, Grumpy. Of course the founders of this country had in mind another idea of citizens, but haven't we done a credible job of adapting?

The electoral college is a two edged sword and the balancing act it permits flows both ways. I think what is disturbing is that the system can be manipulated and I doubt it is self correcting.

For many, many years, a standing joke in Texas was about breaking up the Mexican vote by introducing divisive issues -- issues that would divide that "community." It worked because they weren't really a community, so it was easy to wrap them in issues and fragment their vote.

I think that tactic is being used nationally and it works because whne people vote as one person, one vote, they are easily fragmented. Issues divert their fundamental, ideological votes. To me, it is unethical and unAmerican, but what the heck....

Vouchers, abortion, death penalty, gun control -- all divert voters from any overall statement.
