A politician regards any election from which he emerges the victor as a mandate. That Bush was victorious by a vote taken at the Supreme Court matters not a whit to him.

At the moment, he still has control of the House, and the Senate seems to be thoroughly cowed, so he's firmly in control of the nation. The media have been unstinting in their support for him (of course big business doesn't control the media!), and a majority of the population is so polarized by the assault on the WTC, they'll support anyone who claims to be able to "fix it". Until Bush makes a clear misstep, I'm afraid we're stuck with him.
