Lincoln would have been perfectly content to leave the slavery issue alone, except for slavery in new states admitted to the Union after his election; the North had the votes to keep all new states "free states", and the South wouldn't accept that.

Tobacco was the principal cash crop at first, but as the South was settled, cotton became more important. Both are labor-intensive, so slavery was important to them, they thought. Northern employments required skilled labor, so slaves were mainly servants, I think.

I went to the optometrist finally, after about 5 or 6 years, and my eyes seem to have aged along with the rest of me. :) Much stronger prescription. Quite a few years ago, I think somewhere around '88 or '89, I was pulling some spikes out of boards with a crowbar, and one hit the corner of my right eye, so I know what it's like - I could see, but not very well, and my right eye has been worse than the left ever since.

We got our first sincere snowfall today, and some of the trees still have green leaves. The temperature was pretty warm for snow all day - a few degrees above freezing, anyhow - so it melted until late this evening, and we only wound up with about a half-inch. I hate winter.
