Fair question. I think it was because the proposal was an Israeli initiative -- words thrown out there while the settlements continue to grow; the Palestinians continue to be treated as scum; and Sharon continued to humiliate both the people and their chosen leader. The facts are in the small print -- the government of Israel would rather drink hot oil than imply the Palistinians are a nation. It is important to Israel to make certain Palestinians realize they exist at the pleasure of Israel.

There's a lot of token gestures thrown out there to sooth public opinion, but the facts are as they are. I do not believe Israel can tolerate a partitioned country, meaning a free Palistinian state, and at least it would have been honest to make that plain in 1950 so a real solution could be found.

A "suicide" bombing is horrible, but equally horrible is a culture that perceives no other expression -- that has no other voice. Can anybody really believe the displaced Palistinians ever had a chance at all?

What the Israelis are doing is old, ineffective, cruel, and just stupid. They could have done better -- if they cared at all.
