Sorry it took so long to answer this, but part of the reason it took so long is that your conclusions threw me for a loop. My thoughts went out the window from trying to imagine your point of view.

See, I would have thought that she couldn't bear the sight of him, and was punishing him for something. If he isn't wearing his ring....

No ring means different things to different people. My ex convinced me it only meant he was a carpenter. It was also a great convenience in his extramarital life. So my view is tainted.

I can't imagine a woman needing to be a single mom. I've been a single mom and all I needed was to get through the lonely night. I really don't know what you mean by "all that implies in our culture". I don't think it qualifies her for sainthood, especially considering some of the single moms I've known. It may give her an edge in legal terms tho, if that's what you mean. She would qualify for help from the government just for being a woman, single or not. Maybe more help for single moms but not necessary to qualify for some kinds of help. Like low interest loans to start a business.

If a married woman doesn't wear a wedding ring it's cuz she's either thinking of divorce or revenge, if she's never worn one, she's probably a carpenter.
