I'll tell you SG, I don't know if I'd let it ride. I think I would make an appointment with the pastor and discuss your concerns with him. You certainly express them well here. He needs to deal with the paradox you have identified and if he can't (or won't) then look for an audience with his boss.

I have sat through political speech/sermons in small churches in Florida -- walked out on them and fought my in-laws about them and stood on the position that the church is no place for political posturing. Even Jesus vouched for the separation of church and state. They might not change, but you will have an effect and all effects start small and localized. You might be surprised to discover that others might share your views, but just don't say anything.

A priviledge of age is wisdom and the right to say something. In my view, the words might not change anyhting, but silence won't either. By the way, you are exactly right. We have every right to defend ourselves against idiot fanatics, but we also have the capacity to be generous and sharing and we should. I'm betting that we have the knowledge and technology to help Afghanistan get into the 21st century and we should do it.
