Subject: No name vs Loaded Language
In reply to: Chris 's message, "How should we name it?" on 03:49:10 05/20/04 Thu

If indoctrination is not a proper name, then I would like to use a better term. But we cannot simply ignore these things because we have no proper name for it.

I think by enabling people in cults to give names to the confusing, obscure and often unnoticed practices they are exposed to, you enable them to see the system behind this.

Ah yes, we have the "definition" problem again.
Which word is proper? "Thought directing process" might be a proper, totally unbiased, yet accurate term though in itself, it doesn't have a psychological meaning (I think).

But you know, this entire discussion "is this term appropriate?" was started by UBF people. It's okay for them to ask that question, yet what do THEY say when I ask "Are the terms 'grace', 'mission', 'church', 'faith' etc. used APPROPRIATELY in UBF?" Or aren't they used much rather in a connotation which the Christian community as a whole doesn't even agree with, CLAIMING to be used in the same way? Which use of language is appropriate? Shouldn't those who say that others use terms which aren't appropriate much rather examine their OWN use of language before examining others?

For example, *I* don't have a problem with the term "brainwashing", so what if I'm being brainwashed by commercials? At least I admit I know it's happening and because of that I can (at least to some degree) resist it. But I wouldn't say "you can't use that term because I think I'm quite capable of being unbiased and logically analyzing and by calling me a subject of brainwashing, you are insulting me".

In Christ,
Mike K.
