Dear Christian Man, I am glad that you identified yourself first as a Christian, and as a UBF member second. As you know the tendency in UBF is to see all non-UBF members as fake Christians. I hope you see that this is nonsense.

It sounds like your history with UBF may be very similar to mine. It is good that you do see some wrong things in UBF. In my opinion, 95% of UBF members see very wrong things in UBF and would like things to change. But the leadership, the other 5%, is made up of domineering tyrants who stymie any efforts to change. Thus, you may run into difficulty with your "inside-out" change scheme.

Personally, after 4 years in UBF, I realized there were serious abuses of authority being made by the chapter director. When I tried to approach him about the matter, he stopped me within my first sentence, and proceeded to lambast me and condemn me. Later, I tried to approach him again, and he said, "I understand your concerns," but he refused to change anything.

I would encourage you to do a lot of thinking. Is there really anything good and healthy about UBF that is worth keeping? I cannot find anything. In my opinion, UBF should dissolve itself, its leaders should promise never to hold a position of spiritual authority again, and the other members should integrate themselves into existing healthy churches and student ministries.

Another thing I'd encourage you to think about is how UBF employs the methods of coercive persuasion. If you think more deeply about your interactions with your "Bible teacher" and other UBF leaders, you will realize that they are using a system known as "thought reform," or "mind control." This is unethical and anti-Christian. This alone should give you reason enough to say, "UBF is an unhealthy spiritual environment and I should leave."

My thoughts and prayers are with you as you struggle to discern the truth and do what is right.
