It is definitely a phenomenon typically for cults, though I can't find a general article about this. But here are some examples:

The ICoC proclaimed We've changed long before the recent reform movement, which really changed some things. Quote from the Internet: ICC fallacies that have crystallized into thought-terminating clichés include “God is in control” (see God is in control), “people make mistakes” (see People make mistakes), and “we’ve changed” (see We’ve changed).

Here is an article refuting the COG's claim that "'the Family' has changed a great deal over the years."

See this article about the George Geftakys's "Assemblies" (a group with very similar problems to UBF).
