英國聖公會歷史牧者角色與時代變異之張力（二）

隨著啟蒙運動而來的美國獨立革命和工業革命，終於令英國聖公會全面進入挑戰時期。面對新科技和知識對宗教的質疑，紐曼（John Henry Newman）帶領的牛津運動（Oxford Movement）嘗試透過神學知識跟啟蒙思想對話。

他們回到聖經和教父傳統，重申以聖禮為牧養根基的聖公會牧養模式，帶來英國知識分子一度信仰復興。至於工業革命造成大量低下階層因工作而不能在主日參與崇拜這一事實，亦喚醒了部分牧者的社會良心。當中既是神學家，又是基督教社會主義運動領袖的摩維斯牧師（F.D. Maurice）提出在教會聖禮和牧養上實踐道成肉身的教義，對勞工階層的屬靈需求作出信仰回應。(註1)在尾段，彼得遜引用了七零年代基爾（John D. Gay）的批判讓我們反思：「前三百年英國聖公會歷史可視為從國家及社會生活的去中心過程，工業化和都市化令自足的鄉鎮消失了，但古舊的牧養關顧模式仍沿用不變。英國聖公會真正的問題是仍停留在穩定驗止的前工業及前都市社會。」(註2)

麥金泰（Alasdair Macintyre）說得妙：「歷史既不是一座監獄，也不是一座博物館，同時它也不是一束自我慶賀的花束。」(註3)歷史既不是一座監獄；香港聖公會承襲了英國聖公會不少牧養遺產，但隨著處境的轉變，我們不會禁錮在他們的經驗之內，沒有跟他們犯同樣牧養錯誤之必然。另外，歷史也不是一座博物館，我們不能純然客觀的分析自身傳統之得失。當然，歷史也不是一束自我慶賀的花束，當中有喜、有悲、有值得記取的教訓、也有令人欣喜的啟迪。因此，在這次回歸之旅，給我不少反思。
