Ouch that hurt! This is a forum for Irish Dancers to discuss their injuries and aches and pains, in the event that they do happen (which I sincerly hope they don't). This forum is not to be used as a substitute for medical professionals. You should always go to see a doctor if you are in pain!

Hey,
I have been suffering from a very painful heel for the past few months. I dont know how to describe the type of pain but after each dancing class i can hadrly walk on it and the next day is the same. If I hold my leg up and face my toes to the floor the pain is unbelievable!!! (this occurs at any time!!) Also, if I have walked around for a hour or so i end up limping!
Does anyone else experience this or does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks

Hi - I have had sesamoiditis (pain around the big toe joint) for over a year and a half now. I have been to many physiotherapists but most of them have told me there is not much you can due except from ice my foot. I have orthotics, got a bone scan when the paint initially started to ensure it was not a fracture - which the scan said it wasn't, and have tried taking breaks from dance - the most recent one being approx. 3 weeks. These breaks have not helped my sesamoiditis at all. I generally keep dancing but enventually my foot is very sore and I feel that my big toe flexibility is very minimal (often necessary for being high on your toes)! I have tried going to physio very regularly which helps a bit but this practice grows very expensive. I also have shin splints which one physio thought may be related to the sesamoiditis as the tendon which becomes inflamed with sesamoiditis continues to run up the calf and tightness here could cause pain in both areas. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of how to help - asides from having surgery. Thanks alot!!

Please sign the online petition to save grounds of Tara! Visit: http://www.petitiononline.com/Temair/petition.html . People from any country can sign!

Here's what the petition says:

"To: An Taoiseach, The Irish Prime Minister
I wish to protest the planned M3 motorway through the ancient grounds of Tara. As you are aware, expert archaeologists in Ireland and internationally have pointed out that Tara is not just constituted by the actual hill, but also by the surrounding landscape, which is extraordinarily rich in archaeological monuments. This is precisely the area the planned M3 will cut through, only 1 km from the hill itself.

You are also no doubt aware that the Tara landscape is recognised as a site of not only Irish, but world importance. In particular, it holds a significant place in European cultural heritage. I therefore believe that the Irish Government has a duty to act as the respectful custodian of Tara, and all other ancient Irish archaeological sites, and to protect them for posterity and for the appreciation of present and future citizens of not just Ireland, but of all the world.

I ask you to personally intervene in this issue, and to see to it that one of the alternative routes available for the M3 motorway is chosen instead. I ask you to ensure that Tara remains completely undisturbed and that it is treated with the respect due to both a national and international cultural treasure, "

Thank you for your help!

So, I got my foot x-rayed and I have 3 stress fractures in my right big toe. This was back in the last week of April 2006. I've had important performances and competitions ever since and can only give it a rest in between the competitions and performances. I still have the same amount of pain, therefore I don't think they healed after the full months I set out. I do not want to go back to the doctor until after the Oireachtas because I'm afraid they will brace or cast it and I won't be able to dance at all. So, until the Oireachtas I was wondering if anyone had an suggestions of what to do because I was wrapping it up but it hurt it even more when I danced. (It only hurts when I dance.)
Thanks! <3

Hello All,

I just had a partial sesamoidectomy (they removed the little bone under my big toe and left the other sesamoid) in July and I am about 6 weeks now in a walking boot. The Physical therapist has had me working on pointing my toe and we are making great progress. My question is has anyone else had this surgery done? How long was your recovery? Realistically I realize my chances for getting back into soft shoe dances is going to be a challenge; however, I think my hard shoe work will be doable eventually. Anyone out there have any experience with sesamoiditis and sesamoidectomies? Thanks!!!!

Obviously, there is much more to London
than what is listed here. These are just the essentials to touring one of the
oldest cities in the world. Top Museums To See While Visiting London
First on our list is the National Gallery. It houses one of the greatest collections
of European paintings. If you are familiar with Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt
or Van Gogh, this museum houses those collections and several others from famous
artists. There are literally thousands of exhibits to see and it could take
days to see it all. Special guided tours and holiday events make visiting extra
fun. To get there, just ask to visit Trafalgar Square and walk from there. This
museum is often considered the number one place to see while visiting London.
Another great spot is the Natural History Museum. Kids dig the dinosaur exhibits.
Not to be missed is the earthquake simulator and an elephant bird egg. This
museum is interactive, educational and rewarding for anyone with a curious mind.
Located on Cromwell Road, this museum is great for families.
London isn't just a great place
to visit the hundreds of museums; you can also take a peek at some of its most
favorite landmarks. London is well
known for its palaces and other historical buildings that allow visiting and
tours. One of the most highly visited buildings in the London
area is Buckingham Palace. It gives you the opportunity to see the Royal Throne
Room, Ballroom and more on it's tour. Don't forget the world famous changing
of the guards. Also, the Palace gardens are exquisite for anyone who likes to
see a little green. You won't want to forget your camera.

The Tower of London, a highly recommended place for anyone visiting the city,
offers tours throughout most of the year. This tower began its life in 1078,
when William the Conqueror first ordered its construction. The tower itself
has been the location of palaces, prisons and even a zoo. Learn of its history
by taking a free guided tour of this most famous tower, home of the Crown Jewels

the top picks but also invent your own adventure while visiting London, England.

We run a High-Class escort agency and it’s been a good number of years since
we first launched the London escorts
agency Bond & Mayfair web site. Originally we weren’t based on the
web at all, business has always been booming and all we had to do is rely on
adverts in magazines such as What’s On etc…good advertising is partly
what we needed to do. Times have changed but in fact for the better in many
ways as we are now the most recognised and respected escort agency in the UK.

To have a successful London escorts
agency you need to put in long hours with a lot of determination and dedication.
This is the minimum effort you need to actually stay in business in this industry,
a lot of people will try to bring you down and try to make you look small. They
think they know everything that there is to know but really and truly they don’t
know much at all, these are the ‘Bedroom Boyz’.

Looking at the industry from a distance it is getting much better as more and
more people are beginning to realise that acquiring cheap service from a so
called high-class London escort
agency is not always the right choice. Most of the time they get burnt.

Bond & Mayfair will at all times strive to provide the best value for you
and we constantly keep a perfect blend of old world service at the same time
keeping modern demands and comforts as high priority.

There are many others just likes us that are trying very hard to keep things
nice, clean, friendly and professional but the list is now beginning to grow
endlessly and only the best are being remembered.

To all injured dancers,
Get real!!If you're injured, you wait until you are healed before you even consider coming back dancing. I love dancing to almost an obsessive level. At the height of my competition days, I had recurring injuries spanning FOUR YEARS as I came back early on a serious injury. After a while, parents, teachers, dancing friends began to believe it was all in my head, and I suffered a huge blow to my confidence as a dancer, and as a person. It ended up that I could no longer perform on-stage even if I was at my best in practice. At one point, a physio told me I would be in a wheelchair by the age of 20 if I kept up dancing(on injuries). I have found a new niche in dancing teaching as you have a lot less dancing to do but I take the dancer's twinges, aches and pains seriously. Even so, I am now 21, broke a bone in my foot dancing recently, and have been largely immobile for the last 5 weeks, another 3 to go. I can't do a thing, not to mind dancing. It might be the love of your life but if it ends up inhibiting you from embracing life in general, you will resent yourself for not having the sense to hold back when your body is clearly telling you to slow down, or to stop. Pay heed or pay the price.

Like a fool, I have been dancing with an extremely painful and periodically locking knee, for 6 weeks, only to discover today that I have a meniscus tear - which I understand will require some type of surgery. Timing couldn't be worse and knowing the long waiting lists for MRI's or surgical bookings, I'm almost positive that my impatience will result in my continuing to dance, regardless of the pain. Has anyone ever had this type of injury and/or had it repaired? What type of healing time was required? Was the leg able to withstand the same impact afterwards? Yes, I'm sure the specialist will be able to answer these questions but sometimes personal experiences can offer more insight.
Thanks.

My daughter landed wrong on a jump 2 weeks ago. We went to a foot orthopedic and she has a slight fracture of her growth plate. He also said it wasn't a very bad fracture and even dancing on it shouldn't impact her growth. He said 2 weeks rest.
We are at 2 weeks. It just stopped hurting when pressure applied 2 days ago. It hasn't hurt while walking for a little less than a week.
She plans on starting to ease back to dancing this evening. Our big question is whether she should compete on Sunday. Our plan is to take it day by day and see how it feels and how her dancing looks. A competition is not much actual dancing but they are trying to win and dancing their best. We are really struggling with the level of risk. World Championships are 3 weeks from today. Thus, a competition would be great practice but not if it's too soon to be jumping.

What is your opinion on the competition? Is there some insert that could add extra cushion? Would that be a good idea?

My shins are absolutely killing me when I dance. It's so painful that I can't practice, or else I'm on the floor in tears. I hate not being able to practice because I'm moving up to prelim and my stamina is lacking. Sometimes it hurts to walk, go upstairs, jumping (omg, jumping kills me). It's also sensitive to direct pressure. Anti-inflammatorys don't help. I had it x-rayed the other day and nothing's broken.

Are shin splints usually this painful?

OK, hope someone out there may have some info. My daughter is an open champion dancer. Has had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis for many yrs (she is currently in remission). She has broken 4 bones in the past 3 yrs. She most recently came out of a cast from and ankle fracture. When she went back to dance she experienced some knee pain(same leg as the ankle fracture)for the 1st couple of lessons. Last night she could not dance her hardshoe because of the knee pain. I brought her home and noticed some pretty bad swelling in her knee. The pain is where one that has Osgood's Schlater disease is, but the swelling is around the knee itself. I have an ortho appt, but I wonder if any of you that have had ankle fractures have had knee issues immediately after you were able to dance. Thanks a bunch for reading and any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have been diagnosed with sesamoiditis and have been waiting almost 18 months for it to heal. The orthopedist said my only option is removing the sesamoid bone. He doesn't really recommend it because of the complications which could arise. Please, I need everyone to write back with your experience so I can make a decision. Everything I've read says don't do it. I presently only have pain when I dance. Thanks

My dd fractured a sesamoid in her foot before New Year's 2005. She has been to the doctor, had 5 weeks off, and was told after a final xray that she could begin gradually dancing in dance sneakers. She is experiencing twinges and a bit of pain at times when standing bare footed but not necessarily in demipointe, in yoga class, etc. She wants it feel like it used to before the fracture, but is this realistic? Has anyone any experience to share re: how long before it feels "normal"? Is the referrent pain and periodic twinges to be expected with the resumption of her dancing? thanks for any input!

I'm having a bit of a rough time finding my young dd a a proper fitting jig shoe. We've tried Fay's, which I love the look of and her teacher recommended. Unfortunately once she began to dance alot, she began to complain of pain in the ball of her foot. They were too narrow, and were squishing her toes. We currently have a pair of Rutherford's super flexi plus, which are designed for wider feet (which she has to some degree), but now those are causing horrible blisters (which never happened in Fay's) and other friction related pains, so I can only assume these are too big (her dancing is also not what it was before, and I can tell it is the shoe). Sorry for the long post, but she's young and only has one pair of feet for the rest of her life, I don't want them ruined by inproper shoes.

I'm a cross country runner and, through training on hills over the summer, the outside of my thigh has begun to get sore from the exercise, as well as hamstrings, quads, etc. While I know how to stretch the hamstrings and quads, the outside thigh has stayed tight, and it's beginning to impact my dancing. I don't think I've injured myself, but I was just wondering if anyone has had this happen, even more importantly if they know any stretches to alleviate the soreness!
thanks so much!

I really want to practice more to improve quicker but if I do then they get worse. Does anyone have any advice or streches or any type of adivce?

Getting a little bit exasperated with my body. Im an open dancer in my 20's and have been missing dance classes for the past 3 months because of sesamoiditis (the ball of my foot tendinitis) and on top of the big toe. Basically when I rize up on the balls of my feet, the big toe is in pain (on the bottom, sharp pain and on the top as if someone hit it with a thin bat). I've been in physical therapy for over a month and wear over-the counter orthodics in both regular and dance shoes. I just started dancing again but I'm in a lot of pain...has anybody been through such a thing??. I love dancing for the sake of dancing but I also want to go back to class and later compete.

I have a prelim dancer who was having pain in ball of left foot. The podiatrist says a fracture in sesmoid bone & orthopedic says sesmoiditis since it's been a gradual pain. She's in a fracture boot & taking Motrin 3 times a day. Seems to be geeting a little better. Has anyone had this problem & how long was recovery? Oireachtas practices are getting intense. Also, I understand this bone can be removed 7 one can still dance. Has anyone had this done?

The side of my DD foot right above her ankle hurts. I believe it is some sort of a tendon.
Is there anything I should do for it?
Do you think she pulled it or tore it?
She says it hurts to walk

Thanks

At the end of the year i have to get ankle reconstruction surgery, and i was just wandering if there are any other dancers out there who have had this done. Was it painful? What did you do recovery wise? How long before you could go back to dancing? I know that the surgeon will probably answer these questions for me, but i was hoping that someone with first hand experience could help. Thanks

I've been dasncing for about 2-3 months now and at nearly every practice, the inside of my foot (at my arch) will have numerous shooting pains. I hear that it's because my ghillies have no support and my arch is falling. Does anyone else have similar pains? If so, is this true?

Hi,
My son has just broken the base of his fifth metatarsal,
he has to return to the fracture clinic next week.
At first he was in so much pain, but now he says that it keeps feeling 'fizzy',he says it doesn't hurt anymore and that it is not numb, but feeling as though it is being tickled on the inside.
Could someone please let me know if this is normal, and what should we expect next ?

Thankyou

Thanks
