Ouch that hurt! This is a forum for Irish Dancers to discuss their injuries and aches and pains, in the event that they do happen (which I sincerly hope they don't). This forum is not to be used as a substitute for medical professionals. You should always go to see a doctor if you are in pain!

My DD injured herself and has been unable to dance for a few months. She was dancing up to 10 hours per week. Since she has stopped she has developed red marks/lines all over her thighs and behind her knees. They appear to be getting worse as time goes on and we are not sure what to do.

If you are a prelim dancer and have to take about 10 months off because of an injury, are you still in prelims even though you are probably not at that level anymore? What has everyone else done?

My 10-year-old son pulled a muscle in his groin about 10 days ago. How long a break from dancing should he take? He says he is feeling no pain now, but he's not stretching or dancing. He is qualified for worlds and doesn't want to risk a reinjury. What are the best stretches or warm-ups to do to avoid a recurrance?

I have been having really bad arch pains. My mom used to dance, but she also had to quit because of the arch pain. But, I went to college last year and only danced about 3X the whole year. Then this summer I came back and danced and taught. Now I'm back at school and I danced the other day, but I had a lot of pain. I'm tryin to see if I can use orthotics (sp?) to put in my shoe. I have bought one that says to help arch pain, but I was seeing if anyone has had this problem and any reccomendations. I also have very high arches.

For a week my anckle was hurting and i wasn't dancing my best on it. We went to the doctor and he told us I could have torn a tendon or something so we went to a foot doctor and he says to rest it for at least 2-3 weeks, soak it in warm/hot water, and take so medications. So I'm hoping to be better by Winter Feis. And if I can I plan to work and practice like crazy for the 2 weeks I will be able to dance before the feis. But at least I get to sit out of gym class.

I have been having a lot of trouble with my hips recently. They seem to almost pop in and out when I do different things, especially when I am doing stuff many times (swiches on the floor, getting up after sitting, etc.) It dosnt really hurt when I do it, but the next day or so the muscle seems to be really sore. I asked my dad (who has had every injury possible throughout his life) and he thinks that the muscles arent stong enough. Do you think he is rihgt? and if so what are some stregnhthing exercises i could do. Thanks

Newsflash

'The World Champions have now spoken'

In the article featured on the World Champions in the Irish Dancing Magazine during June and July 2005, the World Champions were asked what their favourite light shoe was. 8 out of 11 World Champions said that they preferred Hullachan as their Light Shoe. Naturally we are over the moon in getting such a recommendation by these superb dancers. For me, as designer, it really makes all my work and research worthwhile. That kind of support can not be bought. It only happens when a product delivers the edge that dancers need. Hullachan is famous for its protective elements and the new Hullachan AP is the results of two years work to improve dancers safety while looking wonderful.
(Source: Irish Dancing Magazine interviews June & July 2005.)"

(ps. we think that the only reason the other three are not in this group is because they have not tried the new Hullachan AP. !)

It dosn't feel any worse when im walking around that evening it stays the same as when im sitting down.

I stretch really well but still the pain get so bad.
I was wondering is this just from beginning to train again or am I looking a different problem now that my feet are fixed?

Wow it's been a busy year for me, and as some of you can tell I have let this message board go for quite some time. I'm not planning on closing it, but I am planning on recruiting some help as far as moderation goes.

I've started working full time as a registered massage therapist at a physiotherapy clinic, and well things have been rather chaoitic.

If there are any issues that you would like to get anwers to a little quicker, please feel free to email me. I check my email a little more frequently than the message boards.

I'm getting around to clearing up some of the junk that has appeared recently, and I'm going to make sure that it gets cleaned up faster in the future.

Hi Shannon & Everyone,

My daughter has been compaining of really bad pain in her shins for the last 2 weeks so i am assuming it is shin splints, i am getting her to do calf stretch ect to help her but i remember months ago at a phsio appointment her physio mentioned that she had very flat feet (fallen arches), could this be causing the shin splints? should she be wearing arch supports?

I would love any information on both shin splints & fallen arches if anyone can help, i really don't know what to do for the best, as i heard that dancing with shin splints without correcting the underlying problem can cause stress fractures, and she has already had a break in her tibia this year so i want to avoid any future fractures.......

Thanks for any advice you can offer

I'm having surgery in less than two weeks to tighten a tendon in my left ankle. I have tried everything to fix this problem including rest, ice, meds and alot of physical therapy so my doctor said it was time for the last resort, surgery. I realize that once my ankle is fixed and i regain my strength that my foot will be healthier and probably won't hurt as much as it does now. However I am very worried about staying in shape and maintaining my weight after the surgery. I will be on crutches for 4 - 6 weeks and than a walking boot for another 4 - 6 weeks. I've been in a walking boot before and didn't gain weight but i'm very concerned that i will gain weight while im in a cast plus i will be off from dancing until at least april. does anyone have any tips for maintaining my weight (besides not eating lol) and possibly trying to maintain some of muscle tone, at least in my right leg. Thankyou!

Hi Shannon & Everyone,

You may remember my message from last month:

"My daughter who dances U10 fell yesterday and has broken a bone in her ankle and has some ligament damage and is in cast for 3 weeks. She is now asking me if she will be able to dance again and i don't have any answers for her i would love to hear from anyone who has had or knows someone who has had this kind of injury and how they got on afterwards (good or bad) as i really need to give her a realistic idea if she will dance again or not"

Well the good news is that she was in cast for 3 weeks and now she has been out of cast again for 1 week and things are looking good, the ankle is both very stiff and very weak but we have been told that the break healed well so now we just have to re-strengthen the ankle before she can try and dance again. She attended physio a few times but they have said that there is no more they can do for it now as it is just a case of getting it strong again, so she has been doing quite a few exercises every day such as ankle circles, drawing the alphabet with her toes, toes raises (going high up on her toes and holding for 10 secs), and balancing exercises to get her balance back and also swimming to get her leg strength back, but we where wondering if you or anyone can recommend any more strengthening exercises for both the legs & ankles that we are not doing yet?, as we want to strenghthen the ankle as much as we can to try and prevent re-injury.

Thanks in advance for any replies

I recently had my 2 year old "bounce" a heavy ceramic mug off my ankle so loud it rang as is bounced off. Needless to say, it hurt. I immediatley put ice on it and elevated it. Once the moderate swelling went down, I could move it fine, but if I stand on it for more then 15 minutes, or try top carry anything, it starts to ache more and more until I get off my feet and elevate it again. I suspect a hairline fracture of the anterior side of the tarsal talus bone of my right foot. What NON-cast & NON-LATEX options are there and what self-help things can I do? The doctor can't see me until 3 weeks from now ( It could be healed by then) and I HATE ERs. Suggestions are appriciated. Thanks.

Hi, does anyone have experience of IRISH DANCE & SCIATICA? I'm an "adult dancer", 26 years old and started Irish dance just six months ago. The worst pains started a few weeks ago (when the classes had already ended, so it might have nothing to do with dancing; still, I've had mild pains over at least the last six months). The pain eased after a couple of days but I still get mild pain most days. Now that I feel better I've started doing some Callanetics exercises to stretch my back and hip joints and to strengthen my muscles, but I'm worried that once the dance classes start next month, my back will get worse. And yet...I'd just hate to give up Irish dance when I've only just started. Does anyone know if Irish dance cause or worsen sciatica? Can anyone give me advice as to how to go on dancing but to prevent the sciatica getting worse?

Just crawled out of bed, but had some thoughts.

1) Eliminate the word CAN'T from your vocabulary. The more you say you can't do something, the more difficult it is going to be to accomplish. I was once told by a psychology teacher that instead of saying you are going to try to lose weight (because it sounds negative), say that you are going to live a healthier lifestyle.

2) Take the time to stop and smell the roses. While you are at competition, don't simply get out and dance, support your competitors and classmates, and make friends. It is much more pleasant to be liked than disliked.

3) Be the best that YOU can be. There is a huge difference between being your best and being the best. Being your best comes from within, being the best is completely subjective.

4) Say thank you to your dance teachers for their guidance, and thank your parents for all their support, and sacrifice.

5) SMILE :-), it has been proven, that no matter how you feel inside, once you smile it makes you feel better. So even on the worst day, SMILE! things will get better.

6) Hugs are also very important, sometimes getting a hug can be the difference between a good day and a not so great day. I think I would have been voted the most likely to randomly hug someone at school. It usually made someone smile.

So as you can see my brain was whirling around in bed this morning.

I did my practical and theory exams last week... I PASSED THE THEORY, now I am just waiting on the results of my practical. I love the waiting.

Well I'm off to Columbus... :-) Have a wonderful day!

A fellow-student of my daughter recently had casts on both legs to stretch an achilles tendon that had become shortened due to toe-walking (the child is 7 years old). She has braces to wear now, and seems to be walking fine, but the mother put her right back in dance classes and is getting ready for a feis. The child was crying after the first class back. Is this a "get back on the horse" circumstance or should she be allowed more time to adjust before dancing again?

My 11 yr old started complaining of thigh pain in her upper outer thigh. She said the pain came suddenly when dancing and feels like a hot knife (she had stretched well prior to dancing). We stopped dancing and iced it right away. It felt better but the next day when she went to dance she couldn't-she can't do jumps or whips. It felt fine when she wasn't dancing. Any advice except ice, advil and stretching?

It's been a while since I have been posting regularily on here. Exams were madness for me, but I passed, not I just have to get through my board exams.

So many people have been filling in for me on here, and have been giving some great advice.

Irish dancers, and their parents are a great bunch of people.

I just got back from Philly on sunday, went to cheer on friends, and had a great weekend.

I just wanted to offer my congratunations to everyone on their performance and decorum. I don't think I saw one dancer that didn't earn their way there. I only wish that everyone could have come home with an award, but in my opinion everyone that got up and danced the best they could is a winner.

I totally feel neglectful of this humble little message board. If anyone ever needs anymore information or has any questions please feel free to send me an email and I will try to anwser questions as best as possible, or try to get more information.

Keep it reel, and best of luck!

okay, i dance in exactly a week today at nationals, i haven't danced since saturday (only for an hour) and had to stop because my hip and foot were hurting. I've been goin to the chiropracter to help me heal, and am not dancing. I plan on dancing at nationals and have decided that in order to keep up my stamina i'll go on the stationary (sp?) bike, tread mill, etc., for at least ten minutes everyday (i started on monday) and plan on doing this until the day i dance (except for the day i travel). What i'm wondering is will this be enough for me to put on a good performance???

I went over on my ankle at class and it felt as if something cracked. It was incredibly painful but after a bit of rest and ice I was able to walk on it. However, the next day it was still swollen and had a lot of bruising, altough it's vey tender it's fine to walk on. it also feels when i'm walking on it, that if I turn a certain way something will snap or elseb that something needs to click into place.

Is this common with a sprain or might I have fractured something. If it's still swollen in a day or two I'll go to the doctors.

My 9 year old dd has pain in her inner left foot, sort of on the side, 1" under her big toe. Family doctor looked at it and said that it was tendonitis. She has cut back on dance for the last 3-4 weeks. It's feeling better, but still sore when she dances, especially soft shoe. When she dances, it feels best to dance in socks. We ice it after she dances. Since the pain wasn't going away significantly, we made an appt. w/ a sports med. ortho. The appt. is coming up next week; then I stumbled upon this forum. Curious to know if anyone had anything similar? If so, how was it treated?

I have been incredibly busy with school recently, its hard to believe that I only have 2 months left until I graduate, and than it is the board exams. I can't wait till I am done school and get to start working.

If there is anything that you would like to know or that you would like anwsered please feel free to email me, and I will either find the information for you or see if I can find somewhere where you can get it.

I was doing so well in the beginning with my tip of the week... I guess it got scrapped somewhere in the middle of school.

I am still planning on creating a website, more than likely it will be at least a few months, on injuries and injury prevention for irish dancers, I should be an RMT by than... LOL don't want to jinx anything though.

Good luck with your feiseanna this summer, I am sure that I will post before than, and don't forget to savor every moment. Irish dancing is a great way to meet new friends, its much nicer than meeting new enemies.

Don't forget that if your injury doesn't get any better in a few weeks, or you are in severe pain, please go and see a doctor, and get proper treatment for it, and if you can take some time off dancing.

Keep on posting.

I noticed some dancers wear the dance sneakers rather than ghillies for practice. Are these "better" for one's feet?
