Hi Allen,

Like Al said, these are fantastic companion dogs as well as great hunting partners. My wife and I stumbled into red setters about eight years ago when a fellow falconer had a little male that couldn't handle the ten mile runs his dogs routinely took looking for sage grouse in the Idaho desert. Aside from some house breaking issues because he'd been running free on a ranch, he blended seamlessly into our houshold and became a wonderful field mate for me and a constant companion for my wife. We lost him to a heart problem (I'm sure the reason he couldn't handle the long runs) at age five and we were devastated. I was surprised when my wife said she wanted another red setter a short time later. We found Reilly at Burgundy Lane Kennels north of Seattle, and the owner (Greg Johnson) drove across the state to meet us with the dog. He's a very well bred, intense runner that has literally cut six inch deep paths in my yard racing back and forth. In the field he's tireless and covers ground like no dog I've ever seen. In the house he tends to get excited and bounce around if something catches his eye, but most of the time he's sweet and loveable with a tremendous desire to be near us.

I just buried our 14.5 year old golden retriever yesterday. He was Reilly's best buddy and our loyal and much loved companion. In the end he just laid down in the dining room to watch my wife and drifted off to sleep. But once again we're devastated by the loss. We're going to wait a while to heal up a bit, but then my wife says she'd like to find another red setter with a bit calmer temperment (like the first one we had) to offset the Reilly's rambunctious nature. This one will probably be her dog for quiet evenings on the couch and morning snuggles in the sunray by the window while Reilly patrols the yard for potential threats. We're thinking maybe a little female that will work as a companion and potential mate for Reilly.

I'm not a serious trainer or field trial competitor, I just want a great dog I can run with my birds in the field and primarily a good companion for my wife in the house. I work a lot of nights and the dogs give both me and my wife peace of mind. All I can say is that the red setters quickly move into your heart and never leave. Whether you end up with a big runner or a quiet little couch snuggler, you'll never regret the decision to bring one of these wonderful dogs into your life. Just remember that they need constant companionship and don't do well in a kennel situation. They want to be with you, and believe me...you'll want to be with them. Good Luck. Dave
