I have some info as well as speculation to give.

First, the info. Windows XP is the first OS to provide DVHS support. It has the driver file MSTAPE included which allows the JVC unit to be recognized as PNP. MSTAPE is similar the MSDV file for digital camcorders which was a few OS versions earlier.

I've done some tinkering to try and get XP to install my Hitachi DVHS. One problem is that if your machine is not JVC, it won't show up PNP. If you try to manually install it the type of device (AVC subunit) isn't even listed for you to select, nor is the manufacturer "JVC". I opened MSTAPE and saw that a control flag blocks the manufacturers from being listed if your unit is not auto-detected. I changed the flag from "*" (all) to "null" and JVC manufacturer became listed. I then selected it and had it point to the altered MSTAPE file. It placed the device into my device manager with a "!" but the Hitachi was not actually installed. Within the MSTAPE file there is information for JVC DVHS, and also some Panasonic, and Sony unit (have no idea which models...my guess is that the Sony has something to do with their mpeg-2 cameras). Rick said that only the JVC driver covers 5C, anyway. I've come to the conclusion that my Hitachi is too diferent from JVC to be installed without having a Hitachi-specific .inf file.

Back to JVC models...the Mitsubishi which is basically a JVC with certain differences can be manually installed using the JVC driver, and Rick has put alot of work into adding support for the technical differences to be encountered with the Mitsubishi (that's partially what DVHStools1.9 is for.....he's got an update at kgbird.com). OK, so we have support for JVC HD DVHS models....I wonder if the the regular JVC DVHS models would be recognized by XP? I think and hope they would be, but don't own one to try out.

If anyone else get's some results, please post them in the compatibility thread and maybe we can get something going here. Rick is a nice guy and will answer email, but according to his site, his priority was with the Mitsubishi model, so I doubt he will be in a position to help with the other models.

I'd hate to have to buy the Mitsubishi on the chance that it would play my old DVHS recordings reliably onto the PC. If I can learn more about the setup information in the inf files I might give it a try to do one for Hitachi. Does anyone know if there is a code on the remote that will load Hitachi device info onto the TV screen? If not the only other way to get that info might be to get a ROM reader. This stuff is probably way over my head, but I am really interested in downloading from DVHS to PC. Let's hear what you guys are doing? Thanks!

Sean
