It is possible - but depending on the brand of tapes, you might get some temporary artifacts and/or a temporary impossibility for the deck to recognize the D signal on the S tape.

D tapes are more expensive indeed but... I myself found it safer to play it safe and only do record on D tapes now.

Also, D decks seem to all have their own 'individuality' - maybe the Thomson will go fine, whereas my Philips only occasionaly does, and somebody else's Philips or JVC will accept it as if it were a D tape with no errors at all...

As far as D recording on S tapes is concerned, only tests can tell you if it'll work or not or sometimes.
As far as encoding artifacts, the DVHS format is infinitely superior to any DVD recorder on sale, thanks to its far far superior data rate.
