In reply to: Elderhome 's message, "Re: Thomson: DVHS recording on SVHS-Tape possible" on 16:57:25 12/08/02 Sun

I got some question for the DVHS recording on SVHS tape? How about the performance, everything is fine? As same as using DVHS tape? Video quality? Audio quality? Surround quality?

Elderhome,
The performance is exactly the same - but:
depending on the S tapes you're using, the recorder you're using (and the mood of the said recorder), you may have once in a while some error messages (ERR200 and/or201).
It means the recorder is lost and cannot acknowledge the type of signal recorded (digital or analog).

Not really worriying: stop the tape, rewind and everything should go fine again.
But, and really worriying as none of us knows how does the digital signal on the tape stands time, it may function now... but what about the future?
DVHS is a great format but quite fragile ; the machines themselves are certainly not built with pro mechanisms.

Mechanical deformation of an analog tape itself due to time/temperature/humidity only makes a drop or two, scrolling through the screen here and there.
A digital drop is... nothing - blank - black - no image - lost for ever...

If you use your deck for time-lapses replays, go with S tapes. If you plan on archiving, play it safe and use D tapes.
