iLink is only for transferring the content of anyone's camcorder to DVHS ; as far as I know, digital cable outputs are not on this format.

What seems to be missing also from the images on the .jp website are the potential mpeg2 outputs. I mean 'potential' because they are hidden on all US and EU machines (but implemented on the hardware.)

Nope, an ntsc recorder will only record in ntsc and most probably not read pal (unlike the EU models which all read ntsc).

The catch is: this is a 'closed' machine, hence its cheap price ; it will not be able to 'communicate' in digital and will only be good to transfer your old vhs/svhs/hi8 etc tapes through its analog inputs only.

...not that the other machines are more 'open': their iLinks are input only and the mpeg outputs are hidden and use a plug format unknown to everybody... but the plugs are here and probably usable - if you have a degree in electronics...

DVHS is a great format and a strange format in many ways... As if a prototype went public.

The one EU machine you can find pretty cheap these days is the Philips VR20D ; same machine as the original JVC, slightly less ugly.
Mine has been functionning faultlessly for the past 4 months (DVHS tapes only).
