Subject: Hitachi DT-DR1

Hi! I live in the UK, but am currently in Japan for a little while. So I've been taking a look at what D-VHS recorders are out there, and found one that costs the equivalent of about £350! The Hitachi DT-DR1

http://av.hitachi.co.jp/vtr/products/dr1/index.html

It can do encoding and decoding of MPEG2, and also can use S-VHS ET which was something I was looking for anyway. But no other D-VHS recorders in Japan are this cheap, they are usually double this price at least. So what might the catch be? Is anyone familiar with this model? The brand name is good. But I think it might be missing i-Link completely. Isn't this what is needed for taping from digital cable? For that matter on any D-VHS machine bought in Japan, is that even going to be possible when I get back to the UK? I imagine a digital recording will work with PAL just as well as NTSC regardless of the original territory of the VCR, but is something like an NTL set-up going to allow this?

I would appreciate it if at least some, if not all of my questions could be answered.

Thanks in advance!
