...dated may 2001, D-VHS is probably fairly alive in Japan, truly dead as a doornail in Europe and 'around' in the US.

Great format, though.
Perhaps the HD capable versions will relaunch the format as a serious contender against the upcoming HD DVD recorders which won't be on the market for another 2 or 3 years.

The main marketing key of the format (backward compatibility) should help, as HD DVD will NOT be compatible with the DVD standard.
