Subject: HM-DSR100 Problem

I have enjoyed using a JVC HM-DSR100 D-VHS satellite receiver for a year and a half. A few months ago the receiver developed a problem that made it unusable. When the problem developed I did not have the time to troubleshoot ot. I switched over to my basic receiver. Now I am trying to fix the HM-DSR100 unit. I will describe the problem below. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem. If so, what might the resolution be? Does Dishnet still support the HM-DSR100 receiver. It seems like the problem is more of a software problem. Is there a way to reset the operating software for the receiver?

Note that the satellite signal strength on the input coax cable is verified as OK because I am using another receiver on it.

Note: The diagnostics test shows that the main unit check is OK.

Problem symptoms:

1. When the power supply to the receiver is interrupted then subsequently restored, then the receiver is turned on it will only stay on for about 5 seconds before turning itself off. If a VHS tape is inserted and then ejected, the receiver then will stay on when the on button is pushed. This porblem actually existed for several months with the receiver still functioning 100%. I mention this symptom wondering if this is normal for the HM-DSR100 unit.

2. The receiver is unable to receive any satellite signal. Intermittently, it will display the information bos that says it is trying to acquire a satellite signal. Sometimes a relay switching noise can be heard coming from the receiver box.

3. When the menu screen is activated and setup is entered, all menu selections function OK except for point dish/signal strength. Also, multiple dish function does not work. When signal strength menu is selected the receiver shows the signal strength bar for 1/2 second then goes to screen that states it is trying to acquire satellite signal.

4. The tape player will fast forward and rewind but will not play.

It almost seems to me that the receiver stopped working when it received some kind of software upgrade or ECM from Dishnet. Is this possible?

I sure would appreciate anyone's speculation, expert opinion, or resolution.....
