"What we want to show is an independent heroine who is not defined by her relationships."

Over the course of 6 years, ME has repeatedly denied Buffy the choice of having a both career and a long-haul lover. I think this is the ultimate slap in the face. Where did ME get the idea that a woman is somehow less independent or heroic or becomes defined by the relationship if she has a long-haul romantic partner?

I know hundreds of women who are great at their jobs and who are blessed to go home at night to their love-muffins. If I'm reading Marti Noxon's interview correctly, then our wives and daughters who have both a career and a husband (or lifetime partner) shouldn't be able to identify with Buffy, because to do so requires that they sacrifice romantic love. Hmmm.

This one interview, if it is to be taken at face value, has alienated a major portion of its audience...any woman who believes she has a right to be sexual with a permanent guy and still go about the heroic job of living. So much for the thesis that modern women such as Buffy get to chose to embrace multiple roles if they like.

Which brings me to the ultimate irony...doesn't Marti have a career and isn't she pregnant right now? I guess she wouldn't fit ME's criteria of an independent heroine who is not defined by her relationships, then.

Personally, this interview insulted me in more ways than one. If it is a ruse, I'm offended at ME's manipulation. And if it is sincere, they still have released me from the emotional connection I held with their lead character.
