I could be wrong but I believe that the rings not only lost their power, but everything that had been wrought by them and all that was done in the time of the rings began to be undone. In this way many things about the world that came to pass during the time of the rings faded into myth or out of history altogether.

I got the impression that Tolkien was hinting that everything really did happen in our world and that the record of those events has been lost to time.

Am I way off base in that? I am re-reading the trilogy now and it has been a while.
