I do not believe that the creation of goals inherently makes more suffering, unless you blindly drive towards those goals without regard to others. In a quick and dirty example, I could easily become a millionare if I illegally dumped chemical wastes in my grandfather's woods. But, I would also be creating suffering.

Setting a goal of banishing suffering is unrealisitic. The only way to acheive is to completely eradicate all life since only life suffers. However, I would then be following the logic of the supercomputers of the original Star Trek series.

I'm going to give you my thoughts, and you are probably familiar with them due to your upbringing: Suffering is caused by sin. sin is the expression of selfishness. The elimination of man's selfishness is impossible, so the eradication of suffering is impossible. However, I can take steps to alleviate the suffering of others and to limit the suffering I cause others.

Why is it that way? I go back to that great thinker: "Life ain't nothing but a funny, funny riddle."
