This is also true in Tolkien's Middle Earth. There is, in the war itself, the idea that success is not possible, but despite that, one should go for what success one can do.

One could argue Tolkien, in the end, allowed for too easy a victory. At times, perhaps he did. But he also followed the dark, grim world-view of ancient epics; this, of course, is seen at its height in the legends which serve as the background for the Lord of the Rings. Turin, perhaps because of the source of this tale, brings this to mind more than any other.

I am not too familiar with most modern fantasy -- so I can not comment on it. But I think the best fantasy authors in the early to mid 20th century, understood that fantasy needs enough reality to be credible.
