Omega - What is the OZ you reference in your first paragraph? Just curious.

Having read the article on your link (I've already heard most of this because the author and others from the New Yorker have been interviewed on CNN, etc. several times since the magazine came out.) there are things that are amazingly bad, esp. the rape accusations.

As for fraternity inititaion rites (hazing), these are a few of the things I heard about while I was at IU:

1) sleep deprivation - up to 5 days straight. I had one guy that I felt bad for so I would loan him my key so he could sneak out of the library and sleep in my bed at Wright Quad - he had to sneak because they would assign people to watch him and make sure he wasn't napping in class or at a friend's place)

2) everyone's favorite - alcohol poisoning. No explanation needed.

3) being hit with the paddle until unable to walk.

4) anal rape with handle of same paddle.

5) anal rape from older members of the fraternity (penile rape).

6) being forced to stand in the cold or the heat while naked until the elements get to you.

The next two are variations on a theme involving threatening your penis:

7) being blindfolded and then forced to place your penis on a windowsill. The twist here is that other windows in the room are slammed down and others pretend to scream in pain so that the pledge is convinced that his penis will be smashed as well.

8) piano wire is tied around the pledge's penis. the other end is tied to a bowling ball. The pledge is taken to the roof and told that one of his potential fraternity brothers has measured the length of wire and there is more wire than there is distance to the ground. To prove your level of trust, you must drop the ball off of the roof. If it is too short, you lose the end of your penis.


Having heard of all of these things, one can see how I could make the comparsion with fraternity hazings. However, I would not be happy with any of these other things happening in a prison environment either.
