Sorry it took so long, but the research is sketchy. From what I can tell, early in the writing of HPL, several Weird Tales readers started believing it was all real because HPL had such an internal consistency to the stories - and when Howard, Clark, Long and others started adding stories with the same internal workings, it further convinced people.

From what I gather, Bloch got his idea from those nuts, not the other way around. However, I cannot find a reference to an actual story that plays with that idea prior to Bloch's.
