Quote MVD: "There are schools that allow children to seek out there own education. Should this not be the role of good educators? That is, to allow students to seek their own education? Handing students only what we think they need seems contrary to how children respond to things."

Part of education is learning about things that you don't think are all that important, such as in my example of social studies. I hated it and would have opted out of any and all classes until I had Mr. Webb at Southside. He was not an exceptional teacher in any way, but for some reason he made it absolutely interesting to me. and now, I am a licensed history teacher, in large part due to his class that I dreaded taking but was forced to anyway.

Going back to MVD's analogy of the lunch tray - if all you ever eat is carrots, you will be unhealthy. The same for Spam. But, if you eat a little from everything, you will have a well-rounded meal. Shouldn't our education be the same? BTW, you had choices in your classes in high school and college is nothing but choices. I knew people who had Mr. Lindsey repeatedly, although I personally think it is good to learn from a variety of teachers.

Part of my role as a good educator is also making sure that my students have been exposed to certain concepts, ideas and materials for the sole reason that society thinks it is important for young people to be aware of them. Do you have to know what the Declaration of Independence is to make a living in this society? Obviously not, but society has determined that it would be best if all students had at least a rudimentary knowledge of the origins of this country and the ideals expressed at its founding. The ideals of the Declaration are the basis for the genesis of this discussion. If "all men are created equal" as Jefferson wrote, than how can we use affirmative action to give some men a head start?

So, going back once more to MVD's analogy - your mother was right when she said "Eat your carrots - they're good for you!"
