Subject: A thoughtful answer

Thanks for answering so thoughtfully. You raised a few interesting points, such as the initial conditions of belief, primarily that which deals with "that which is greater than us."

Still, the question remains, why do we perceive ourselves to be flawed? I think you answer this in part when you say that we feel somewhat inadequate to communicate or relate to the cosmos, or the whole, or "that which is greater than us". I think the other part of it is certainly our awareness and obsession with death, that being also linked, as you say, to the relation with the cosmos.

We could talk about this issue in slightly more psychological terms. I have often wondered if this "inability" to relate to the cosmos (or that sense of oneness) does not actually stem from self-awareness and thusly the split between conscious thought and unconscious thought. In this sense we might argue that our truest "now" nature has been somewhat lost, and thusly our ability to perceive/unperceive our connection with all things.

The question still remains for me, really, why men began to prescribe moral guidelines as cures for our supposed ailments. Perhaps it is simply explained as an outgrowth of our tendency to want to control our environments. I am not sure...
