I often use St. Peter's Waymansville when I talk to people who are concerned by the rapid growth of the Hispanic population in this area. Inevitably, someone says that their acnestors learned English the instant their feet touched U.S. soil. Then, I mention that we had German services in the Waymansville church until the 1930s, a good 50 years after the height of German immigration. Jane's Home church (St. Paul's, Columbus) had German services until the 1940s. But, eventually, our family lines were firmly intergrated into the English speaking world. I tell them (the worried folks) to be patient, it'll be 50 years or so, but eventually they'll integrate in and there will be Hispanics complaining about the immigrants from some other part of the world who aren't learning English fast enough.

Adilbrand: Even though he was a monster, I even feel a sense of perverse pride that Hitler was German. At least it wasn't a Frenchman that threatened the entire world with fascist insanity.

I don't think a Frenchman could have pulled it off - the French have a terribly powerful independent streak, much like the Brits and the Americans, that just encourages the mocking of those in charge. Not altogether a bad feature, even though it creates annoying cultural phenomena like Eminem and Kid Rock.

One other area of historical interest that I have is the Indianapolis 500. Its roots are so deep and throughout the state and its early history is the history of the early auto companies - and the biggest and the best were on the south side of Indianapolis. Thats why the Speedway was built - as a test site and a showcase for new engineering.

I actually own 2 of the original bricks the Speedway was paved with - they were given to us as a gift from a lady Jane knows who has a pile of them in her backyard.
