Subject: Besides, I don't see arrogance in the question
In reply to: mvd 's message, "Low class behaviour" on 11:42:31 06/27/02 Thu

Besides, it IS lower-class behaviour. The behaviour describe does indeed typify the lower income bracket. It is well documented that the different social strata have different customs and different values from each other. It certainly is not arrogant to try to understand a different culture, nor is it arrogant to label it as a behaviour attributable to the lower classes. Indeed, in my diversity training course, the shirtless behaviour was one of the aspects of lower class culture we studied.

It is lower class behaviour. Nor is labeling it such arrogance. It has nothing to do with "elevating" himself. He (and I) are middle class. We have middle class values and cultural standards. Perhaps it is unfortunate that the labels applied to these cultures indicate a higher/lower status. I do not feel I am any less of a human being than some of this nation's rich elite, but I still would not call myself "upper class". I do not share their culture or their values. Calling someone "lower class" does not necessarily mean that one is putting them down. It is just a label that sociologists have given that particular culture in our society, one that has a lot to do with income and background.

You said, "I see." I don't think you do. I think you completely misunderstood what he is trying to explore.
