Subject: Armageddon, the Aztecs and how they are related
In reply to: Adilbrand 's message, "Re: Armageddon" on 12:01:19 07/05/02 Fri

I agree w/your premise but I think that you are putting way too much stock in people's having thought about it. I think its pretty simple - people have heard that Armageddon is supposed to happen in the Middle East, Israel is a constant source of military uproar, so people think Armageddon is going to happen soon. Personally, I 'm afraid that people will let a sense of fatalism ("Oh, this must be Armageddon so we can't stop it.")let things get too out of hand in the region and we will have serious trouble break out because not enough was done to try to get people to work things out.

Adilbrand's mentioned the Aztecs and I think this fits the issue exactly. In brief -the Aztecs believed that the god Quetalcoatl was going to return on a certain calender cycle and destroy their empire. This year turned out to be 1519 on the Western calender, the year Cortes arrived. The Aztecs were very concerned about this prophecy and stepped up their human sacrifices to the point where they were sacrificing night and day - and they did not sacrifice Aztecs, but their vanquished neighbors. When Cortes came, he exploited the Indians' beliefs that he might be Qetzalcoatl and they let a sense of fatalism control their actions - they could have wiped out his little army when they first landed - but they did not. He exploited the fact that all of the Aztecs' neighbors hated them due to the oppresive human sacrifices and he built a coaltion force that destroyed the Aztecs.

So, the Aztec fear of destruction in 1519 caused them to take actions that eventually caused their destruction.

Our (as in Western) feeling of the inevitableness of "Armageddon" might cause us to fail to take action to prevent it.

Quite a few people have made a nice living out of picking when the end of the world will occur (Jehovah's Witnesses, Worldwide Church of God and this nutty TV preacher Jack Van Imp, to name a few) and they prey on those who want to believe, but will not study enough on their own - a believer should take heart in the promise that no one knows the time, so don't worry about Armageddon and support efforts to bring some harmony to the region.
