Subject: ANHOW Review of Books: "You Have the Right to Remain Silent" & "The Apostrphe Thief" by Barbara Paul

"You Have the Right to Remain Silent" - published 1993 by Worldwide Mysteries.
"The Apostrophe Thief" - published 1994 by Worldwide Mysteries.

So, here's a little background - these 2 books are published by "Worldwide Mysteries" - a cousin publishing house to the harlequin-style romance novels and the ultra-violent shoot-'em-ups and the cheap westerns. So, its not that great of a company. Usually, they publish books I can't finish or, if I do, I don't bother to review them here. However, these 2 are different.

First things first - the author has a nice little website that is unique because it seems to be maintained by her, rather than a publicist. It talks about her books but also about writing in general and her approach. It is located at www.barbarapaul.com

You may have read one of her books already - in fact I know Adilbrand has. She's the author of a Star Trek novel published in 1988. On her site she talks about what is required to write a star trek novel and how easy it is. Here's a link to the page.

It also includes Star Trek updates, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

So - on to the books. "You Have the Right To Remain Silent" is a quadruple ritualistic murder mystery featuring NYPD Detective Sergeant Marian Larch. She's fed up with all of the politics in police work and on the verge of quitting throughout the book. The characters are original and show some depth. The mystery itself is unique, including a motive that I still think is a little off, but...most murderers are a little off as well. I give this book a "B-"

"The Apostrophe Thief" is definitely the better of the two books. In fact, it is the reasn I picked them up. I was fascinated by the title. What is an Apostrophe Thief? Does he steal the apostrophe from "it's" to make it "its?" Well, it is the name of a Braodway play that has been burglarized for the items that can be re-sold to collerctors. It includes fascinating insight to compulsive collectors of memorabilia. This book was written pre-EBay so all of the collecors have to connect by word of mouth or at auctions so there are lots of offbeat characters to meet. This is the better of the two books. I give this book an "A-".
