I bought direct TV while I was living in Virginia. Now that I live in Japan, I gave my system to my parents. Basically that was an upgrade from their usual 2 channels to 100+ channels. At $29 a month it is great (which includes ESPN/ESPN2). Now, if you wanted sports packages, that will of course cost extra.

Over all, it was great. I loved it. Now, one thing that is negative...during a very bad storm, you will get pixelation or graphical errors. But, that was a rarity.

In addition, there are interactive portions on some commercials or movies....like a car commercial will have a icon appear on the tv...if you hit it, you could essentially either obtain more info about the car, or other items. I believe other commercials you can order online, via sattelite....

Now, not sure about cable, but, if you want to change your programming, it takes about a 1 min phone call, and a wait of about 30 seconds to 2 mins for your change to occur.

Hopefully my rambling makes sense, but, I love DTV...
