Petra

You have me a little confused - what exactly do you mean by "a registry of diseases for our breed which our National Club could present to the ANKC for use in DNA profiling and testing"?

The DNA 'testing' that the ANKC is putting in place is actually 'typing'. Similar to the US scheme a dog/bitch will need to have their DNA profile on record. This typing has zero to do with testing for disease or genetic defect. It simply positively identifies the animal to be what/who it is said to be i.e. if I go to register a litter of puppies the parentage of those puppies can be proven by verification against the already filed DNA profiles of the sire and dam. No DNA profile held then no registration.

The ANKC is also suggesting that the establishment of the DNA profiles provides an opportunity to limit breeding/registrations through recognition of serious health issues/problems within in a particular breed. This is already happening with a number of breeds opting to classify HD as a serious problem within their breed and hence registrations of puppies is not available to dogs which do not meet HD testing requirements.

The DNA typing will not identify these diseases/genetic disorders, at least not at this time when there are no established gene tests for HD, ED, sinus, thyroid, etc etc etc or even DNA strings attached to these conditions, it simply means that some or all genetic testing currently highly recommended may become mandatory for registration.

Regards
Cyndy
