Hi Rosemary - I'll bite :-)

If a dog is to be considered Best Gaited then I expect that dog to be able to do an out and back in a straight forward, free and active manner just as well as they can do a side gait. Side gait - especially done double time can hide a lot of faults that become glaringly obvious on the out and back. I for one would consider any dog hocking in or out, moving too close or too wide behind NOT to be 'straight forward' and hence not in contention for Best Gaited. I expect to be sent out and back even if only for elimination purposes before the main event of side gaiting.

I prefer ridges to be judged with the dog standing - easier to measure and most of the time dogs are more comfortable with the usual stance and judge position relative to them rather than 'who is behind me' and 'what the heck are we sitting for anyway, Mum'?

Regards
Cyndy
