Hi,
My thoughts on judging best gaited is that a combination of up,back and side gait should be judged to ascertain the best gaited dog. When I have judged the class whether at the RR shows or other breed spec shows I find that moving both ways makes my job easier in sorting through large numbers of dogs in the class. Some dogs look correct on the side gait but show faults on the up and back and vise versa some dogs can be sound on the up and back but lack the correct reach and drive on the side gait. So for me it must be a combination of both to get the full picture and award the right dog.
Judging the ridge class I again prefer to use both sitting and standing. Sitting the dogs is good to give the people ringside something to look at and I can select dogs for closer inspection. My selected dogs then can be double checked while in the standing position.

best regards
