Hull Daily News (England, Hull)

Ghostly goings on at the New Theatre
pantomime-

A SHOCKED panto star today revealed the spine-chilling
moment she came face-to-face with a mysterious ghost in a
shadowy basement corridor at Hull New Theatre.

Stunned Emma Morris, who is playing Dick Whittington,
couldn't believe her eyes when she glimpsed the spook in a
narrow corridor seconds before she was about to go on stage. Actress Emma (20) is convinced the mysterious figure -wearing
a black cape and black top hat - was a ghost who is
believed to have haunted the theatre for decades. She knew nothing about the macabre spirit until she spoke
about her chilling encounter to colleagues.

The ghost reputed to haunt the venue is nicknamed Charlie -
and he is definitely a ladies' man because several women over the years have reported having their bottoms pinched by him!

Shocked Emma said: ''It was really freaky. I haven't see
anything like it before and I didn't like it very much.
''I did not think anything about it until I got to the top of the
stairs because sometimes you see people around here
anyway.
''I thought I was cracking up because I usually don't believe in
anything like that. I had heard there was a ghost but I didn't
know anything about it.''
Emma said even the air around her went ''freezing cold'' when
she bumped into the theatrical spirit.
Theatre spokeswoman Alison Duncan said: ''For those of us
who are here, he's part of everyday life - part of the fixtures and
fittings.
''Those who have seen him, they do believe. For the rest of us,
it's a bit of a mystery.''
Ghost writer Peter Robinson, of Beverley, said: ''Ghosts do
exist. People who deny their existence have only to listen to
people who have been on the receiving end of them.''
Charlie the Ghost's haunting history.

Possible explanations for the ghost are that he was stabbed in
a fight in the 1840s or was a builder who fell into the walls
while the building - then the Assembly Rooms - was being
bricked-up in the 1800s.

Ghost writer Peter Robinson, of Beverley, reveals sightings of
Charlie in his book ''Peter H. Robinson's Third Book of Ghosts
and Hauntings''.

The first reported encounter was in 1943 when theatre worker
Eve Rainforth saw a strange figure in a dark grey riding coat
with long hair curling-up at the ends. ''He was so totally
different,'' she recalled.

An usherette in the 1960s reported hearing footsteps of
someone coming upstairs during a performance - but there
was no-one there. Another heard the sound of crockery being
laid and felt an extreme coldness. Again, no-one was there.

Another usherette felt an icy draught and a door swing open -
and wardrobe mistress Peggy Moran heard a ''swishing noise''
and saw a ''grey mass'' moving along a corridor.

Singing star Dana, appearing as Snow White in 1982, and a
wardrobe mistress heard continual knocks on the door but
no-one was ever there. They also heard footsteps follow and
pass them.

House manager Val Peacock claims to have had ghostly
encounters, including doors opening and closing.

In the 1980s cleaner Jacqui Gower saw Charlie apparently
pulling himself a pint in the lounge bar.

City councillors John and Ann Stanley had a ghostly
encounter when Ann saw a figure in a long cape emerge ''out
of a grey mist'' from a box during a military band performance.
The apparition floated from the box 4ft over people in the stalls,
she later reported. Her husband did not see anything but felt
an ''icy cold''.
