think about what you use (or would use) the computer for the most: homework, surfing online, games, whatever.

While laptops take up less space and are portable, do remember that they could suck battery power like crazy, need to be plugged into some sort of modem to get online (yes, there are modems to connect with cell phones, but I think they're pretty darn expensive), and if you're into computer games (the graphic intense variety) some laptop screens can't process the speed at which the graphics change and can look/act very choppy.

Also, think about what sort of programs you'll be using. All the software will really eat up that hard drive space, and by the time you save your own files on there too, you'll use up all those GB of hard drive REALLY quick!

so, the long and short of it, decide what you'll be using it for, and talk to someone knowledgeable in computers (ie the salespeople at Best Buy or wherever) and see what they recommend... I'd talk to a few different stores under the premise of "browsing" - see if they say the same things or are just trying to sell you something more than you need.
