- :-) Just found this board - it is GREAT! -- Jill, 10:32:09 06/06/02 Thu
I designed and maintain the Burke School website (www.burkeirishdance.com) as well as the Youngstown Feis site (www.youngstownfeis.com) using FrontPage and have them hosted via Powweb (powweb.com). It costs about $8.00 a month with a ton of space.
When I originially started the sites (3 years ago), I used Geocities. It was fine until last year when we started shutting down due to high traffic.
I'm just an ID mom who had a "real" Info Technology/Web job until a few months ago when I was downsized :( If you need any help or have questions, I'd love to try and help.
I'll be bookmarking this site! Thanks!

Can anyone give directions/advice on how to do this? I have to put a link for people to be able to download the Adobe proggie too, correct? Thanks.

- Unspoken Rules ... Spoken -- Ashe, 10:52:38 06/05/02 Wed
Don't be afraid to try someone's way of doing things. If the navigational system that you want to use as you've found it to be very easy to deal with is "somebody else's", it doesn't mean you can't use it or something similar.
And for goodness' sake give hints on what your website sections are about. It's so confusing when you put the pages you've updated in your updates without saying which section they're in. Not everyone is as well-versed in your website as you! ;)
Anyone else have tips?

We're a vocal group so these may of course have been mentioned, but what "unspoken rules" do you think there are in terms of Irish dancing websites? For example, don't use the same image as a logo as another website has. If someone else has asked for a bit of information from someone, don't ask that person if you could use the same. Something along those lines?

Hey, I'm sorry that someone took all your pictures. I really love looking at them. I am working on a site with some of my friends and since I'm the one who's been in photography classes since I was eight, I'm the one taking all the pictures. I have got some from different feises, but my question is am I allowed to put up the pictures without the consent of the people in those pictures. I asked some groups to let me photograph them and they said it was fine, others I just got from photographing stages. I never thought of this before, but I guess I thought of it when I heard that others had taken your pictures. I would be up for any kind of webring that you have in mind. You always have the greatest ideas! Sorry about your pictures again!

- Make something open in a new screen -- Lisa-DanceAgain, 19:14:37 05/28/02 Tue
I am a bit of a dunce when it comes to HTML, I use the Geocities site builder. I have just worked out how to make a clickable button woth html that I want to use as a button people can click on to go to a curency converter. But the link I am using takes people away from my site because it opens the currency converter in the same screen. Can anyone tell me what I can add to my code that will open the converter in a new screen? and where in the code do I put it?
I tried to put the code into this message but it just converts it to the button so you can't see it, this is the button...
Thanks

- ? Time Online. -- EireLibra, 13:40:18 05/24/02 Fri
Hi everyone,
Just a quick question, I am curious as to how it works at your houses.
In a redesign, or just working on websites, you spend a lot of time on the computer, that's granted. Add the fact that you work from a dinosaur of a computer that has to be restarted at least twice an hour, and you get serious time online.
Anyways my family doesn't seem to think my time is being used productively (aka-they would rather see me washing windows and weeding the yard during my short summer break)
Does anyone else have this problem? What can I do to alleviate my parents feelings that I am being lazy by sitting at the computer for hours in a row?
Thanks for your stories and insight.

The Hardshoe Diaries is a community dance diary. Several dancers plan to contribute regularly to this blog-style page.
Christy's Corner features advice and stories from a professional dancer -- in this case a Las Vegas "showgirl." OK, it's not Irish Dance, but it gives all up "old folks" a chance to live vicariously through others who make their living as a dancer...
I'd love to know what you all think!

Trying to make a web page. Tried angelfire, but the advanced site was only for html-which I am too lazy to learn at any great length and Front Page editor was a trip in itself. Tried geocities, which seems pretty easy to maneuver(sp.), but I'm trying to get somewhere in between where my special fonts and original graphics don't look like poor quality compressed uploads. I operate at this time with only a cheap version of Corel Print House and Corel Photo House. Is there a better program or webpage builder that I can buy for better results with compression and fonts etc., something that someone with average intelligence and limited computer time can master? I have seen the Diochra site only once and I was very impressed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I also found, somewhat by accident, that the Milwaukee Feis society used two of my images on a flyer they made last year! Wouldn't have even known about it, except we were staying in the hotel, and my friend happened to show us the flyer!
Have you thought about good ways of "confronting" people? I hate to feel like a b*tch about it ~ cuz it's not a big deal, but at the same time, it is, ya know?

- more copyright stuff -- Christy (Criosa), 00:22:40 02/10/02 Sun
so, while at the Nashville feis today, I'm with a few adults from another school, and they're talking to two musicians... I suddenly notice the "other" side of teh "feis person badge" - three dancers legs dancing... well, that looks familiar, so I ask to see, and low and behold, it is my picture!
so after we go up to our room, we start talking about copyrights and watermarks and what-not (one of the girls works in graphic someting-or-other)
so, her understanding is that if you just stick the copyright circle thing on your stuff, that's not enough, you have to actually pay for it to be copyrighred... (I swear, I've read differently)
She also mentioned that she's seen/encountered some sort of watermarking thing where it doesn't show up, but when tehy try to print it or edit it then it will have a "watermark" with your info appear - anyone heard of this?
in the meantime, do I confront the feis? it was "just their badges" after all (as opposed to a different feis that used my pics for flyers for the hotel guests...)

Don't you positively dislike it when people unwittingly use your ideas? Ireland's Dance is implementing a "submit your article" idea that I was planning to use. And the new layout is similar to what I have. Bloody heck. I don't know what to do with the layout now - I'm keeping my submission idea because it's not only for information or articles, it's for other things as well. The new layout's sort of dark and so is Jess's...with the bar over the top and menu down the side...maybe I'll scrap it.
ARGH. ;)
(And today in Journalism I found out a girl wants to make my idea that I'm writing on into her own monthly column. Excuse me... so tommorrow I'm discussing this with her and will "suggest" that we work together on the column...)

- >:-( What O/S does everyone use? -- Jenny, 04:29:30 01/10/02 Thu
We use Windows ME and have to reboot so often, I could scream! It does not like graphics programs, and even more, doesn't like when we have more than one open at a time. We never get more than 73% system resources (after rebooting) and the moment we start using anything, it usually drops to between 40% and 60%, and then lower until we get the message "not enough memory."
Has anyone else had this problem? We are thinking of either upgrading our memory to 256K or upgrading the system to Windows XP. Has anyone does either of those? What were the results?

- webrings -- Lisa-DanceAgain, 15:30:58 01/10/02 Thu
I am a member of several Irish dance webrings and have noticed recently that the ring links I have on my page now have one of those annoying white squares with the red cross in it where there used to be a picture. Has this happened to anyone else? All three rings that did have a picture now have the blank square and red cross, would it be my code do you think?
While I am on the subject of web rings, if anyone would like to join my DanceAgain ring, go to http://www.dance-again.com/links.html and click the 'join' button on the link at the top of the page.
Thanks.
P.S. Ashe, it is so nice to have a place to ask these kinds of questions!

- help! -- Lisa-DanceAgain, 15:54:40 01/09/02 Wed
I have some clip art on my dressmakers page and I was just checking my site and realise I don't have the link etc from the site I got it from. I did have it before on my old site but that no longer exists so I can't check and I can't for the life of me remember where I got them!
If anyone has the time, would you mind taking a look and just maybe you might recognise them and know where I got them. I originally just typed "free clip art" into yahoo and surfed through lots of sites until I found these, I think they were on a craft clip art site. I will keep searching but if you can save me the time I would really appreciate it!

- ? Only pics? -- Theresa, 15:06:46 01/05/02 Sat
Does this include only pictures? I don't generate my own images (although I do give credit and follow the rules for the ones I use!) but I have come across several websites whose content has been *remarkably* similar to mine. One was so blatant that it even imitated my writing style and (admittedly bad, but original) jokes! What about text "borrowing"?

- copyright -- Lisa-DanceAgain, 15:50:57 01/06/02 Sun
I just came across this site about copyright and think I have answered my question from below, just writing something down gives you copyright of what you have written it seems. It can be registered with a government body but is not necessary.
Here is the site...

- What exactly is being formed? -- ~*Toireasa*~, 11:47:00 01/05/02 Sat
Hi Ashe, sorry to hear about someone stealing your copyrighted material...I've had that happen to me before and it's not fun. haha, and then the person who took without asking gets all defensive and rude if you simply ask them to link you or give you some credit.
Is it some kind of club you are thinking of forming?
I'd love to hear more...I'm just a little confused about what it is exactly.

Sounds like a great idea Ashe! I can never understand how people would be able to steal something and then pass it off as there's with no guilt. I've never seen anything of mine be stolen but its better to be safe then sorry.

Hey Ashe,
Great idea! Count me in. It is a little annoying to say the least to go to another site and see the work that has taken you sometimes hours to do, just taken in a click of a mouse by someone else!

Here are a few bullet points...
- Agreement between all to ask before using
- A webring of this
- A website for good examples and a "poor"list
- The Webbies portion of my site is going to have hints, tips, tutorials and tricks; a few essays on content, design, copyright; Rate Me! Helpful Reviews; and other things plus things submitted to me by others
- I'll have a few more once I can remember, LOL
