- some useful bits of HTML code -- Christy, 12:33:27 09/24/02 Tue
after looking at Diochra/Webfeis on school's computers, I now know why I was going to HATE the new "Smart Tags" that MS has implemented into the latest versions of it's programs... it finds text and puts annoying links to sites you wouldn't want to go to (i.e. on webfeis, it links "Missing Persons" to the site for US Search)
oh, those "smart" links are underlined with a green/yellow/green line, and when the mouse hovers it puts a little "blurb" about the site (kinda like when you have the mouse on your clock and the date pops up)
you can read more about them here:
http://www.greyday.org/news.html (it was news on 8.20.01)
only problem is, I've found it coming thru on my pages, and I have that bit of code in my header - grrrr...
the code is: and it goes in the header with all your other "metas"
also, to keep that little image toolbar from popping up (especially helpful if you have a no right-click script) put the following in your header:

Can anyone tell me how to make a link to a point within the same page? So for example if you had a menu at the top of the page and when you click on one of the links, it takes you to a point further down on the same page, not to a different page. Does that make sense? I'm using frontpage, so if someone knows how to do it in frontpage that would be helpful. Thanks.

For anyone who uses dreamweaver.. I just discovered it has an inbuilt FTP program.. so you don't have to use a seperate prog. Maybe I am just blind, but I had never realised before that it had this.
You have to set up the ftp address, usernam and password when you define a site, then when you are using the sitemap view, you can click the little button that looks like a plug, and hey presto, it automatically connects you and you can drag and drop to transfer files.
It is different in format to the FTP programs I have used before, but it aint bad.

- Photos -- jessie-rae, 09:12:15 09/21/02 Sat
Ok.. i know this has been discussed but I didn't pay attention at the time. I just put a poll up on the homepage of Ire. dance, and most of the votes are saying new photos in the Galleries.
I'd love to ut more pics up.. I am out of my ban now and will be competing again very soon, so would be able to take loads of pictures (plus I am interested in photography so would love to do this). But there is this whole thing about photos on the internet.
But what i don't get, and think is pretty disgusting in terms of attitude, is that a non-daner who takes photos of dancers get smashed for it, yet a dancer who has photos on their site doesn't.. even though some of the dancers in the photos did not give their permission or even know the photo was taken(i know there are pics on my site with other dancers in them who did not know the photos were being taken).
And the photography companies.. not everyone knows that those photos are going to go on the internet. Whatis the difference between Photo Flair putting up a results picture of the British Nationals, and my doing the same?
So what do I do? Would I have to ask the permission of every dancer I took a photo of? Before or after the photos was taken? I have a digital camera.. so people would be able to look at the photos and approve the actual shot if they wanted.
I know that I am not really sure of that idea.. i mean, I'd feel really self-conscious going up saying "hi, I'm jess and I run Ireland's Dance, a website. Would you mind if I put up this photo of you as part of a photo gallery of this competition?.
grr, I hate all the nitty gritty involved with websites sometimes!!!

- need a host for a basic site? -- Christy, 08:52:29 09/21/02 Sat
try DotEasy...
You pay for your domain (or to transfer your domain), and you get free hosting. Mind you, the space is very minimal, but if you have a basic site (or are making one for a client), you probably don't really need all that much space right away.
Also, if you get referrals, you can get your domain/transfer fee waived.
You can also pay for extras - more space/bandwidth, more emails, adding CGI, Frontpage extensions, etc.
I've used them for about a year for casheladults.com and haven't had any problems... I've just moved criosa.com over to them as well. They're control panel is ok. They also offer web-based and pop email.
if you sign up, do me a favor and follow this link:
http://www.doteasy.com/index.cfm?A=criosa
also, mention that criosa.com is the referrer - it'll help waive my domain transfer fee

- >:-( aaaaaarrrrrrrrggggghhhhhhh -- jessie-rae, 13:50:05 09/06/02 Fri
I have had the WORST internet day.
First we get barred from using ht einternet on our ISP becasue we use the internet TOO MUCH. We were on an "Unlimited" access account.. but it was really "Unlimited metered" so it wasn't really unlimited at all.. cos they checked how much you were online and it you weren;t allowed on for more than x hours a day.
So i spent all morning trying to find a new ISP that allowed REAL unlimited (i.e. Unlimited AND Unmetered) access at a decent price, and also at a decent quality - which was available in my area (cos there are a ton that use cable or braodband, but we dont have that out here in the middle of NOWHERE).
Finally find one
Bit hten my irelandsdance.com emails won't work, because the new ISP will only send emails thru it's SMTP server if they are THEIR email accounts. Darn, cos my host doesn't have its own smtpo server. So I search hours for a server i can use. No luck.
So i finally settle for setting up redirects & such.
Oh, and one of my other sites was completely deleted off the net because of it.. it was hosted on the space i had with the old ISP, and now, KAPUT, it no longer exists. Good thing I have a hard copy.. but not on my computer.
Now i have to reset that up. And i have to try and remember old passwords and I can't, and hotmail is taking ages to load and i am stressed.
Sorry.. needed to vent. Happy jess now.

okay, so im fairly new to the irish webdesigning message board, but i had a cool idea, and i thought, why not share it with the irish web designers of the world?
i know some people have personal blogs on their site, and i just totally got into the craze too (heehee). but i was looking at other sites, and i figured out that you can make a blog with more than one author, so it's a whoole big community on one blog. and it was really cool. and i thought, heck, were a bunch of crazy irish dancers, why can't we do that?
you could make a whole community blog thing for irish dancers, you know, insight into the world of irish dance. with like, 10 or 15 bloggers on one site. and even people who aren't website-savvy could do it too, cause blogging really easy.
I don't know, just an idea I had. It gives me a reason to get my own blog :-)

I scanned a simple picture and all I can figure out is how to paint, spray etc but it doesn't give a definite edge and comes out very fuzzy and is too hard to stay in the lines. Is there such a thing that will allow me to colour and get sharp lines? or is this impossible doing it with only a mouse?

Yes, yes, as soon as I get some extra bucks to purchase it, I'm going to get that new domain.
Or as I said on my website: "I'd like to let everyone who was interested know that as soon as I get the money up, I am going to go on with buying that domain to resell space. Unlimited amount of files, as long as nothing's illegal (no video clips that don't belong to you, etc); a short URL with the ability to get a domain name without paying for expensive hosting; absolutely no pop-ups, or ads (besides a link back to the hosting domain); listing in the member directory; and a free email address. Payment Plans: Businesses, schools, and feiseanna websites that I haven't designed are $6/month; websites that I've designed are $4/month; and personal pages are $3/month. You can't get unlimited web space for that little anywhere else! But I need to get the money up first. (If you'd like to pre-pay...) Payments are either once a year or once every six months. Come on! Support my college/new-to-me-car fund! Hahaha. ;)"

I want one that you can post pictures onto voy (which rules out the geocities, right?). I hate the annoying pop-ups but will put up with them until I get the website going. When I get my own domain, I would like to not have to recreate the whole site. One other thing I would like to avoid is when too many people visit, it locks everyone else out. I'm working on Judy's (my friend, she's a dressmaker) website and I'm trying to come up with a clean, professional look for her. You can see the site I did a while ago at www.thebestdressedltd.net. I already decided that all colored backgrounds must go, my main problem is finding a code to use for the layout. I am thinking of having a scroll bar to the left with the rest of the main page info (including a logo of a dancer, yet to be completed by the *famous Sandra* of *Ghillie Studio*) in the window to the right, but as I said, I can't find an HTML code or even a helpful website that shows how to do this. Any ideas? Thanks and happy web designing!

It seems I can only copy and paste from one Word document to another and can't just right mouse click it and 'save as'.
Am I missing something really obvious? in the end I always have to email the person back and ask them to re-send the photos as a jpg attachment and it just wastes time and I hate hassling people to re-send stuff.
Any ideas?

Is it just me, or are others out there frustrated with the lack of results being posted from the North American Nationals? You would think that in the hi-tech world of today there would be someone willing and/or available to post their results for them.
One message I saw somewhere said "It's too hard to post the results in a timely manner on the web -- tables are too hard to build, you can't import from excel, etc." Do you guys agree with this?
Personally, I would gladly volunteer to be a webmaster in order to do just that -- especially at the Nationals level. The Worlds seemed to do it... and I know that even after a day of competing, I've come home and hard coded results pages from local competions.
What do you guys think?

As there was no e-mail contact on this page or other related pages, I reported the abuse to Angelfire. Any other suggestions on what I can do (I'm going to add a no-right-click script to my photo pages now... that should take about FOREVER!)
(P.S. If by chance the site owner reads this -- which I doubt since if they come hear they SHOULD KNOW BETTER THAN TO STEAL PHOTOS -- please e-mail me through culkinadults.com and remove the photos from your site.)

- *!* EXCELLANT UPLOADING SERVER!!! -- ray, 03:30:54 07/09/02 Tue
Hello everyone i dont know if you know or not, but geocities.com users and angelfire, those servers with the annoying pop adds there is a better server that is fast and doesn't have pop up adds. http://www.fateback.com or http://fateback.com either one i cant remember but i signed up to it anyways and its soooo kewl. If your a person with big files larger that 200k this isn't the place for you because thats the largest they will let you upload which is probably why its fast. another think is that you can't use ftp on it but there is a Thing like on geocities where you go down a list and click browse and upload with up to 13 uploads at a time. try it out and tell me what you think.

It seems we don't tend to have that many conversations on here.. the odd thread when someone has redesigned a site.. but not too many discussions about different aspects of website design. Dunno about anyone else but I'd like to see more of that!! lol
Anyways.. what do you all think makes a good school website? What should they have? Do you have any favourites?

Hi guys n gals
I finally done a layout that works with IE and Netscape its based on tables and i also managed to get most of the bugs out of it like the scrollers going odds colours and the title being in the wrong place. Tell me what ya think its http://clickyfeet.fateback.com but you can still get to it from http://clickyfeet.cjb.net i also added another boys info page about the steps. I need ideas about stuff to add to the boys center i have on my site. email ideas to clickyfeet@hotmail.com thanx.

- That sound you heard was my Netscape imploding.... -- Culkin Adults, 05:25:26 07/05/02 Fri
Strangest thing yesteday --
Logged onto the computer and my Netscape 6.1 had developed a brain and decided it was time to restart itself. I use Netscape Mail at home as my e-mail program (too many viruses target Microsoft Outlook), but lo and behold, all of my profiles -- and more importantly all of my saved e-mail -- was just GONE.
Has anyone else dealt with this?
I contacted Netscape support and they directed me through a series of steps that restored about 15 messages, but they were all old deleted messages and none of the one's I had saved.
Argh!

- New Domain Community? -- Ashe, 13:40:05 06/27/02 Thu
I've thought about getting another domain to host personal websites at for a fee (enough to cover cost of the domain and pay myself for hosting - hey, gotta make a profit). I'd have to figure out password protection so that everyone can't dig into everyone else's files.
It's something to ponder since people seem to get frustrated with the free servers. I think I'd be the right person to do it. I'd have monthly, quarterly, or yearly fees at a decent price. I could host personal, school, business and such sites over there.
What do you all think? Would you pay to be hosted at a domain I run? It's not a free server, but it's Irish-dance specific with support and a community attached, no pop-up ads, etc.

- Name the Domain -- Ashe, 20:26:40 06/30/02 Sun
I'm looking for names for a new Irish dance domain that I'm thinking of creating. It will be a family-friendly place that will host Irish dance-related sites, all in one spot: personal, business, schools, and more.
It should be a great community with cheap hosting with NO popup ads and virtually NO downtime, an ad-free message board, free layouts submitted by hostees, possibly on online page editor so that you don't have to have an offline editor program or whatnot to create a site; yet the host supports those who have the ability to use CGI scripts, Flash and more.
Any name ideas? Would anyone be interested? Please take my poll at http://www.diochra.com/poll.html concerning that!

Hi! I'm new to this board... but I have a reason. You see my mum is an ID dressmaker and she just asked me to make her a website because people keep asking to see pictures of her dresses.
I've never made a website before, my husband has and he said he'd help me but... when is he ever around?! lol!
I've already got FrontPage on my computer so I was planning to use that program, but what's the most user-friendly program out there? Should I try something different?
Also, anyone have any tips? I'm going to keep the website really simple and basic because, lets face, people just wanna see the dresses and they want the pics to download as fast as possible!
Thanks for your help, and BTW, I LOVE all your sites.

Does anyone have any photos such as:
A dancer (either in full costume, or in spikes, shoes or something that shoes that ayre an I.D.er) Using a computer. I know Dancing in Celtic used to have one, but it has been taken off the site, and is only up in a tiny tiny square
Dancer (as above!!) using a mobile phone
I am needing pictures cos I have finally had a strike of photo inspiration for Ireland's Dance!! Credit would be given to the owner of course

- Email -- Kate, 07:29:56 06/18/02 Tue
Hello. I'm having some trouble with my email. I would like some help.
I have the Klez virus, just found that out today. It was my dingbat head younger brother who got everyone infected at my house. I hate him even more now.
We have to email servers, Comcast and hotmail. Our hotmail is preventing everyone from being able to send messages( I think).
I can receive messages, so what I need one person to do is send me a email, which I will try to reply to. If the person does not get a reply from me in 48 hours, I will have proved my point.
Because, if I can't send messages, I can't send in my webfeis entry. So I came up with this:
I'll need someone to send it in for me. Crazy I know. But, I came up with the perfect plan: I'll post it on horseland(www.horseland.com) on a pre worked out homepage. The person would then copy and paste it in email, send it to Ashe. Then the person will tell me they sent it.
First: Can I do this? Please?
Second: Who will do this email thing with me? Anyone?

What about font color #s (I needs blue, pref. light - med blue, and various shades of goldenrod)??? And how do I add a sidebar??? Links?? All the html I knows is text color, font face, center, right alignment, left ali, etc.

- What the?? -- jessie-rae, 06:23:00 06/07/02 Fri
I am getting kinda freaked.
In the past 10 minutes I have recieved 2 emails from my own email addresses - to other email addresses.
First was from the email I set up for another website of mine (not Ireland's Dance) to my hotmail account. The title was "drawing curves with the pen tool".
Second one came from the OLD (different) email address for the same site, with the title "colour management properties", ot my Ireland's Dance email.
The body of the emails were empty, no attachments or anything, but the one to Ireland's Dance, whioch i opened with Microsoft outlook, showed up with a message "This message contains scripts which Microsoft Outlook cannot display".
I'm freaked out!
I didn't send the emails, and one of the addresses it came from hasn't been used for months, but I have just checked it and it too has an email from the new address, again with a colour/graphic related title.
And they're being sent to my own email addresses. But I don;t have these email addresses stored in my own addressbooks - and it appears that the emails havn;t been sent from my own computer.
Argh!
