I'm no longer that nice about it right off. I let them know right off that I am NOT happy about what they did. I go through and name specifics and what they need to do to rectify the situation. I'e done evrything from having the person steal my photos, to having my threehand dancers modified and put on a school website (the teacher didn't know, she had it sent to her by a student), to having my design elements and HTML taken, to having someone take parts of my Ashe's Shop dancers and put them on their own dancers, and more. Then after I get my fill of "yelling" (which is pretty quick), I tend to soften the blow a bit by complimenting them on certain original aspects (because usually they do have really great parts that are THEIRS), but explaining why it hurts me (and in actuality it hurts us all) to have this done.

They usually see the error of their ways quickly; sometimes I have to spend time in IM or multiple emails with some very defensive people. At the end of the day I have them seeing my way, though, and I always offer that if they ever need help with their website, they should feel free to ask, no hard feelings.

The funny thing is that after all of this, if they've modified my graphics then they usually stop modifying mine and make their own - and they end up being really good! (If I may name names, I'm sorry if this offends you, but for example Raymond's Clickyfeet did this and now CF has great graphics of their own up!) Anotehr example is the person who took design and idea elements from me - and Sarah's Irish Feet is now one of my favorite websites because she's doing it for herself now.

See how it goes, folks? You don't get respect for following someone else's lead (even though it's almost essential to look at others' sites and see what their doing) - you have to go from there and do your own thing.

THAT is what enriches our little online community, not the same old pages all the time. And if you don't think you can do it, reach into yourself - it's there! Would you believe that Diochra (in its infancy, "Earth") used to be a bit of a cookie-cutter site?
